Surgical and simple dental extractions
As a last resort, the Kitty Hawk Dental Care team may need to remove a natural tooth. Dr. Kimberly King of Livermore, California, recommends keeping teeth whenever possible, but sometimes the inevitable occurs, and one or several teeth need to be extracted. She is here to offer both surgical and simple teeth extractions to help patients in various situations.
Why might I need a tooth extracted?
- Severe toothache that cannot be saved with root canal therapy
- Extensive and deep decay or infection that cannot be repaired
- A tooth has had a failed root canal treatment
- A tooth, or several teeth, are causing overcrowding in the mouth
- One or more teeth have become impacted
- Trauma to a tooth that cannot be restored
- To prepare for dentures or orthodontia
- Teeth are loose or damaged from periodontal disease
What is the difference between surgical and simple extractions?
Surgical extractions involve the removal of a tooth that is impacted or stuck below the gum line. That often occurs with wisdom teeth, the third molars that are the last to develop in the mouth. Dr. King will need to cut into the gums to remove the tooth, which can be a relatively invasive procedure and requires extensive healing. Simple extractions, however, are the removal of teeth that are above the gum line and easily accessible. Simple extractions heal faster and need just a few minutes to complete once the patient is sedated and anesthetized.
What are some tooth replacement options available?
After a tooth has been removed, patients must have them replaced with restorative dentistry. Extracted teeth can often leave behind gaps that cause teeth within the dental arch to shift out of place. Tooth replacement options at Kitty Hawk Dental Care include partial dentures, complete dentures, implant-retained dentures, dental bridges, and dental implants. Our team can help you determine which tooth replacement option is most appropriate for your unique situation during a consultation and examination.
