We offer both composite (tooth-colored) and amalgam (metal) fillings at Kitty Hawk Dental Care. For patients concerned about the aesthetics of their treatment, tooth-colored fillings may be the best option since they look natural and can be matched with the color of your enamel. However, metal amalgam fillings are long-lasting, durable, and are often covered by dental insurance. During your appointment, our team will discuss your options and help you decide which type of filling is right for your smile.
Composite fillings are made of a special tooth-colored dental resin to create a strong, durable material that matches the shade of your existing teeth perfectly. This means that the results of your treatment will be aesthetically-pleasing. Composite fillings have a very strong hold, and usually require the removal of less natural enamel during preparation.
Amalgam fillings use a blend of metals, typically including silver, tin, copper, and mercury. This amalgam is strong and durable, and is easy to work with, making it a great choice for fillings.
Amalgam fillings are typically the most affordable type of dental fillings, and they are very durable, particularly when used in the rear teeth. However, they have a grayish color and can discolor your tooth after treatment. Some patients also report that amalgam leads to tooth sensitivity.
Dr. King has received her certification in the BioClear Method. BioClear is a special, proprietary method used to wrap dental composite around your tooth using a plastic matrix. This treatment is an alternative to both traditional dental bonding and porcelain veneers, and can be used to strengthen and restore broken, worn, or even unsightly teeth, and close "black triangles" between your teeth. Schedule a consultation with Dr. King to learn more about BioClear and see if it’s right for you.
Not at all. You’ll be completely numb during the process, and we’ll only remove decayed or damaged enamel from your tooth. Your filling may feel a bit sore or tender for a little while after your treatment, but the filling process won’t cause you any pain or discomfort at all. Our team will give you detailed instructions to follow in the days after your treatment, but any soreness or sensitivity should subside within a few days.
If you see that one or more of your teeth have visible discolorations such as black or brown stains, or you see visible pitting or a hole in your tooth, you most likely have a cavity and will need a filling. More severe cavities may also cause your tooth to feel sensitive to heat, cold and pressure, or cause a toothache. See Dr. King right away if you notice one or more of these symptoms.
If your filling falls out, you’ll need to come to our office and see Dr. King right away. A pulled-out filling is a serious dental emergency. The weakened enamel below your filling will be exposed to oral bacteria, and could decay further or even cause a tooth infection. If your filling falls out, don’t wait to get treatment! Get in touch for an emergency appointment as soon as you can by calling us at (925) 371-8880.
