Dental advice to keep your child’s smile healthy and bright
It’s earlier than you may think. The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry (AAPD) recommends that kids see the dentist for the first time when they turn 1 year old or their first tooth comes out, whichever happens first.
Preventive dentistry is the practice of using regular six-month teeth cleanings and oral exams to ensure that your child’s smile is healthy, and free of common problems like tooth decay and gum disease. It may also involve additional treatments like fluoride treatments and dental sealants, which can help fight back against common oral health problems.
Dental sealants are often recommended for kids who are cavity-prone. They are applied to the rear teeth, and consist of a liquid dental resin. This plastic resin is painted onto each tooth in a liquid form, and then is hardened with a UV light. When it hardens, the resin creates a transparent plastic barrier. This barrier prevents the bacteria, acid, and food particles from contacting the enamel, which stops the formation of cavities. Sealants can last up to 10 years, making them a good long-term investment in preventive dentistry.
This depends on your child’s age. For infants and kids under 2 years old who do not have most of their teeth, Dr. King will do a “lap exam.” You’ll hold your child on your lap, and Dr. King will examine their mouth and clean their teeth and gums, then discuss your child’s oral health and development with you.
Kids who are 2-3 or older or who have most or all of their teeth will get a standard teeth cleaning, just like an adult. A dental hygienist will scrape away plaque and tartar from their teeth, brush their teeth with a high-powered brush, and floss to get rid of any remaining debris. Then, Dr. King will examine your child’s mouth. X-rays may also be taken if we think they are necessary, and you approve.
Proper at-home brushing is the most important thing when it comes to preventing dentistry. Make sure your child’s teeth are being brushed for at least 2 minutes twice a day. It’s best to brush once in the morning and once at night before bed.
Flossing is also important. Floss once per day to remove food, plaque, and bacteria that are left behind after brushing. You’ll need to floss your child’s teeth until they’re about 10 years old, and are coordinated enough to learn how to do it on their own.
A tooth-healthy diet is also important. Minimize snacking, and avoid sugary drinks like juice and soda, as well as starchy and sugary snacks like candy, potato chips, and pretzels. Instead, feed your child fresh fruits, vegetables, lean meats, and whole grains to keep their teeth and their body healthy.
Finally, make sure you see Dr. Kimberly King at Kitty Hawk Dental Care for a teeth cleaning every six months. Dr. King will examine your child’s mouth and ensure that their smile remains strong and healthy.
