What Is Enameloplasty? FAQs About Shaping & Contouring

Enameloplasty, also called “shaping and contouring,” is a common cosmetic dentistry treatment. It’s often used alongside dental bonding to restore and improve your smile.

But if you’re not sure exactly what enameloplasty is, how it works, and when it’s used, you’re in the right place! In this blog from Kitty Hawk Dental Care, we’ll answer some of your top FAQs about enameloplasty. Let’s get started.

What Is Enameloplasty And How Does It Work?

Enameloplasty is simple to understand. It’s a cosmetic treatment that’s used to remove imperfections and give you a straighter, more appealing smile. In this process, Dr. Kimberly King will use a special sanding tool to gently remove a thin layer of enamel from some of your teeth. This usually takes only a few minutes, and is a very simple process.

By removing some enamel, Dr. King can improve the balance, appearance, and overall shape of your smile. This is particularly true when enameloplasty is combined with dental bonding. Dental bonding involves using tooth-colored resin to build up, reshape, and improve the appearance of your teeth.

How Is Enameloplasty Used To Improve My Smile?

There are a few common reasons that Dr. King may recommend enameloplasty. For example, if you have lots of very small chips in your teeth, she may recommend enameloplasty to smooth these out and restore your smile. Tiny chips can be caused by things like excessive teeth grinding (bruxism).

She may also recommend enameloplasty if you have some teeth that are uneven or have sharp points. Gently filing down these teeth can enhance the overall appearance of your smile, especially in combination with dental bonding.

Will Enameloplasty Ruin My Teeth?

No! This is a common misconception. Since it involves removing some of your natural enamel, many patients think that enameloplasty will “ruin” their smile and weaken their teeth. But this is simply not true.

The enamel layer of your teeth is very thick and strong, and enameloplasty involves the removal of just a tiny, thin layer. After this treatment, the health and integrity of your teeth will not be harmed in any way. Your smile will be just as strong, and it will look more even and beautiful, too.

Does Enameloplasty Hurt?

Not at all. The outer layers of your teeth do not contain any nerves, and enameloplasty only removes a very small amount of your enamel. Because of this, you won’t feel any pain or discomfort during your treatment. There’s usually no need to even numb your mouth during this treatment.
